Overview
Mercy Health Kings Mills Hospital is seeking a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) to provide respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. The practitioner performs respiratory care procedures including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services and patient and staff education. The patient’s response to therapies is monitored, and adjustments may be recommended based on assessment.
Responsibilities- May serve as the shift “Charge Therapist” with responsibility for ensuring adequate staffing coverage and assigning staff to work areas and duties.
- Assist physicians with procedures such as bronchoscopy and invasive monitoring as applicable.
- Perform CPR and airway management in accordance with the American Heart Association ACLS protocol.
- Conduct prescribed therapeutic procedures to maintain a patient airway, including use of endotracheal tubes, airway devices, humidification, suctioning, extubation, and monitoring equipment; document procedures in patient and department records.
- Select, assemble, monitor, and evaluate mechanical ventilators; address malfunctions and determine appropriate use for patient condition.
- May perform pulmonary function tests (PFT).
- Serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
- Assess patient status through physical examination and review of data; modify treatments based on patient response.
- Determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy and communicate recommendations to the physician.
- Set up and maintain different modes of oxygen therapy to maintain adequate oxygenation.
- Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or aerosol therapy, monitor vital signs and response, and adjust therapy as needed.
- Provide postural drainage, chest physiotherapy, and education on therapies to patients and families.
- Procure sputum for culture and sensitivity and manage airway clearance as ordered.
- Perform arterial punctures and ABG analysis; manage arterial lines and related safety procedures.
- Maintain Respiratory Therapy equipment and supplies; respond to cardio-pulmonary emergencies as needed.
- Bachelor's Degree, related to Respiratory Therapy/Healthcare/Healthcare Administration (preferred)
- Current Respiratory Care License in the state of practice (required)
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed (required)
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred)
- BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (required)
- ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association or Red Cross (required)
- PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (required)
- NRP Neonatal Resuscitation Program - AAP/AWHONN (preferred)
- CPFT (preferred)
- RPFT (preferred)
- ACCS (preferred)
- Two years of experience as a Respiratory Care Professional (required)
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, and staff
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work with diverse populations and provide quality customer service
- Data gathering and interpretation; accountability
- Knowledge of non-invasive respiratory therapy equipment and systems
- Therapeutic procedures experience (e.g., CPAP/BiPAP, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy)
- Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and arrhythmias
- Arterial blood gas procedures and testing
- Airway management and bedside pulmonary function testing
- Patient assessment and patient education
- Knowledge of chest suction equipment
- Chest X-ray interpretation familiarity
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred)
