FTE: 0.3 (12 hours per week)

Shift: Days (7:00 am‑3:30 pm)

Weekend Obligation:
Every Other Weekend

Position Summary

This position provides direct professional nursing care to patients through the implementation of the treatment plan. It includes initiating nursing standards, implementing physical and psychological patient care, and evaluating responses to care as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • CLINICAL JUDGMENT
    • Demonstrates a knowledge base necessary to care for adolescents through geriatric patients in the psychiatric care setting.
    • Develops a treatment plan appropriate for the patient based on the nursing assessment, incorporating the family in the plan, and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Recognizes the need to change the plan based on the patient’s strengths, goals and responses; and documents progress or lack of progress.
    • Functions independently to arrive at an appropriate solution as a result of sound decision‑making and critical thinking skills.
    • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize patient care based on assessed needs and staff competencies.
    • Seeks input and feedback when needed.
    • Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions.
    • Demonstrates ability to assess the patient for risk of aggressive/escalating behavior.
    • Engages patients who are at risk and applies alternatives to physical intervention by using verbal techniques to de‑escalate.
    • Demonstrates appropriate use of physical intervention.
    • Administers medication in accordance with standards and policy.
  • ADVOCACY / MORAL AGENCY
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement.
    • Identifies processes in the system and the therapeutic community that can be improved and provides this input to the appropriate individual.
    • Maintains integrity and confidentiality of information.
    • Attends treatment care conferences to assist with the discussion and planning of patient care.
    • Supports the philosophy of patient and family centered care, recognizing the individual needs of the family. Supports family involvement in the care of the patient and supports family presence.
    • Identifies issues of customer service and acts to resolve issues within available options. Refers complex and unresolved issues to the appropriate party.
    • CARING PRACTICES:
      • Strives to meet and anticipate customer needs.
      • Demonstrates flexibility in adapting to new, different, or changing requirements.
      • Presents self in a professional manner, and appropriately relates to others.
      • Deals effectively with stressors in the milieu.

      • Provides for the care, welfare, safety and security of the patient by maintaining a therapeutic community.
    • COLLABORATION:
      • Displays a positive team‑oriented attitude and behavior.
      • Participates in and follows all scheduling guidelines, taking into account staffing needs of the unit to ensure delivery of high quality patient care.
      • Collaborates with patient, family and interdisciplinary team in the development of the treatment plan and demonstrates the ability to communicate this plan to others via report or patient rounds.
      • Demonstrates quality patient care and the positive mentoring of peers.
      • Delegates appropriately to other members of the health care team.
