Position SummaryOur appeals lawyers argue precedent-setting matters routinely in the Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court. We seek applicants of all experience levels for our Appeals Unit.
Assistant District Attorney:Appeals Unit
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office seeks applicants for the position of Assistant District Attorney in the Appeals Unit. The candidate should have superior research and writing skills; prior clerkship or law review experience is desirable.
Key responsibilities include:
- Research, draft, file, and argue complex and high‑profile appellate cases in the State Judicial Circuit (SJC) and Appeals Court.
- Research, draft, file, and argue post‑conviction matters in the superior, district and juvenile courts.
- Provide legal advice to other assistant district attorneys in the office.
All full‑time positions offer a state benefits package that includes health, life, disability, and dental/vision insurance, retirement plans, vacation, personal and sick leave, and more. Payroll is paid bi‑weekly and based on a 37.5‑hour work week (normally 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background check. All positions serve at the pleasure of the District Attorney.
QualificationsRequired:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Strong communication, research, writing, and computer skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office ().
- Adherence to the Massachusetts Rules of Professional Conduct and Hampden District Attorney's Office Personnel Policies.
- Completion of relevant training and ability to work respectfully with the public, judiciary, law enforcement, and office staff.
Desired:
- Superior research and writing abilities.
- Experience with appellate litigation.
- Prior clerkship or law review experience.
