Working Waterfront Community Organizer

Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance

The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance has stood shoulder to shoulder with small‑boat fishermen for over 30 years, advocating for those regulated every day yet underrepresented in the halls of power. We are building a movement to ensure that fishermen and the working waterfronts that sustain them remain strong, viable, and heard in policy making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and lead organizing campaigns guided by the Alliance’s policy and advocacy priorities.
  • Build deep, trust‑based relationships with commercial fishermen, families, and community allies across Cape Cod and coastal New England.
  • Mobilize fishermen from diverse perspectives to take collective action on shared issues from fisheries policy to working waterfront protection.
  • Develop grassroots campaigns, petitions, comment letters, and public events that center fishermen’s voices.
  • Strengthen and expand our reach across coastal New England, connecting with other small ports and fishing towns facing similar challenges.
  • Build strategic alliances with town leaders, elected officials, and coastal organizations to advance working waterfront protections.
  • Mentor emerging leaders and help shape the next generation of coastal advocates.
  • Work within a collaborative, fast‑paced team that values listening, creativity, and courage.
Qualifications
  • Experience in grassroots organizing, advocacy, or community engagement (any sector).
  • Exceptional listening and relationship skills, especially across diverse or divided communities.
  • Strong verbal communication and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently while collaborating closely with a small team.
  • Respect for the experience, culture, and expertise of commercial fishermen and coastal residents.
  • Flexibility to travel within New England and occasionally work evenings or weekends.
  • Preferred:
Experience connecting local organizing to policy or regulatory change.
  • Preferred:
Familiarity with rural or coastal communities.
  • Preferred:
Comfort navigating both grassroots and institutional environments.
