The Part-Time Head Competitive Cheer Coach is responsible for the overall management, development, and competitive success of the Anna Maria College Competitive Cheer Team. This includes actively recruiting, coaching all skill levels (tumbling, stunting, pyramids), choreographing routines, ensuring team safety and compliance, and representing the program in a manner consistent with the mission and values of Anna Maria College. The coach must foster a positive environment that supports the academic, athletic, and personal growth of all student‑athletes.
PrimaryResponsibilities
Coaching and Instruction:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive practice schedule and lesson plans for all practices, conditioning, performances, and competitions.
- Teach, demonstrate, and correct proper technique for all competitive elements, including stunts, pyramids, baskets, standing/running tumbling, and jumps, ensuring all skills are taught in a safe, progressive manner.
- Choreograph and teach competitive routines that meet specific scoring criteria (e.g., USA Cheer, NCA/NDA) for regional and national competitions.
- Conduct regular evaluations to monitor individual and team progress and implement targeted skill development drills.
- Implement appropriate conditioning, strength, and safety training to prevent injuries, utilizing proper spot techniques at all times.
Team Management and Administration:
- Manage the team’s stipend and operating budget, including tracking expenses for competition fees, uniforms, equipment, and travel.
- Coordinate all travel logistics for competitions and team events, including transportation and accommodation.
- Maintain accurate inventory of uniforms, practice gear, and safety equipment, ensuring they are properly cared for and stored.
- Manage team communications via email, text, or team apps.
- Secure practice and event facilities in coordination with the Athletics or Student Life office.
- Coordinate Game‑Day/Spirit appearances for required Anna Maria College sporting events.
Student‑Athlete Development and Compliance:
- Serve as a positive role model, mentor, and leader for all team members, promoting high standards of behavior and sportsmanship.
- Monitor student‑athlete academic progress to ensure all participants maintain institutional eligibility requirements.
- Establish and enforce clear rules, standards of conduct, and disciplinary policies for the team.
- Maintain and enforce current Cheerleading Safety Certification guidelines (e.g., AACCA, USA Cheer Risk Management) to minimize risk.
Recruitment and Program Development:
- Actively recruit qualified prospective student‑athletes who meet the College’s admissions standards to sustain and grow the competitive roster.
- Maintain a database of prospective students and communicate with them throughout the recruitment process.
- Organize and conduct tryouts for incoming and returning students.
- Assist the Athletic Department with program promotion, community engagement, and fundraising efforts.
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Previous coaching and/or competitive cheer experience, preferably at the high school, club, or collegiate level.
- Demonstrated proficiency in choreographing and teaching advanced stunting and tumbling techniques.
- Current Cheerleading Safety Certification (e.g., AACCA, USA Cheer) or willingness to obtain one immediately upon hire.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain one upon hire.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including significant evenings and weekends for practices, games, and competition travel.
- Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
- Work is typically performed in a gymnasium, field, or event setting.
- Requires frequent standing, demonstrating and spotting physical movements, and lifting/moving equipment.
- Requires travel with the team to scheduled competitions and performances, which may include overnight stays.
