Summary Description Guardian Rail is proud to operate one of the country’s leading freight rail services and transportation companies with a large network of freight and tank car repair facilities, a nationwide network of running repair agents, and a rail services division that operates short line railroads and contract switching and transloading sites.

We are currently seeking Valve Technicians for our Maumee repair facility. Incumbent Valve Technicians are responsible for the installation, service and repair of tank car valves in accordance with specifications. Responsibilities include recording maintenance information, including test results, material usage and repairs made; removing and replacing defective valves; observing gauges for pressure losses and testing internal seams for leaks. Candidates must be able to read and comprehand detailed work orders, and make repairs in accordance with FRA, AAR, Guardian Rail, and customer specifications.

Candidates must have a safety and quality mindset and enjoy hands-on work in year-round outdoor conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities Interpret job work orders to perform required valve removal and repair

Coordinate and complete repairs in an efficient manner and within assigned hours

Record maintenance information including test results, material usage and repairs made; removing and replacing defective valves; observing gauges for pressure losses; and testing internal seams

Notify supervisor of any materials and/or equipment required to ensure completion of job tasks

Interact with crew members in a team environment, as well as with supervisor

Follow all safety rules, keep work area clean and comply with all Guardian Rail Environmental Health and Safety Policies Complies with company's Quality program by following all in house quality processes and procedures and required AAR and FRA rules and regulations as well as any client specific procedures.

Qualifications Ability to read, write, and communicate English at a proficient level

Ability to learn function specific operational details and pass an exam to demonstrate knowledge

Ability to learn, follow and perform required recordkeeping of Guardian Rail EHS, and Quality policies, procedures, and checklists.

Work in hot and cold environment, in and out of the weather; work safely around heavy equipment and on top of, under and inside railcars, as well as around railroad tracks.

Knowledge of equipment and tools required to perform safe entry for cleaning

Perform/ prioritize multiple tasks with attention to details.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to wear and care for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to steel toed boots, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and other PPE as required.

Physical Demands & Work Environment Our physical work environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid and dusty conditions. The environment requires working in close proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, in high and low precarious places, confined spaces.

The work type is best described as heavy, hands-on mechanical work. Work is very physical, and without proper work planning can result in out of position pushing, pulling, and lifting. Proper body mechanics, positioning and lifting techniques can be very important. Employees are urged to seek help when needed with heavier tasks, and to use lifting equipment where necessary. The positioning of the work being performed can change very frequently.

Tools used:
Various heavier air and electric powered tools are used, such as car jacks, impact wrenches, and grinders are used daily. Work also requires frequent use of hand wrenches, hammers, chisels, socket wrenches, and ladders. Cutting torches are also used, with welding equipment used upon qualification of employee.

Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, smelling and visual acuity, with color and depth perception

Ability to work in a confined space

Required to use personal protective equipment as environmental conditions dictate
