Pay Range

Base pay range: $/yr – $/yr

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are assumed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship – Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens as per VA Policy.
  • Education – Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • License – Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training – Completed residency in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification (ACGME or AOA approved, or other qualifying residencies).
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) – Eligible for PRP status if currently enrolled in an approved residency; must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Experience – ABPN board‑eligible within five years of residency completion; current board certification or participation in MOC.
  • Experience – Treating Veterans with DSM‑5 disorders and telehealth care.
  • Job history – Employment lasting greater than one year per position.
  • Physical requirements – Light lifting under 15 lb, standing and walking requirements, adequate vision and hearing, and mental/emotional stability.
Duties
  • This is an open continuous announcement until January 23 – 2026 or until positions are filled.
  • Eligible applications will be referred at regular intervals as vacancies occur.

  • Recruitment incentive: sign‑on bonus and EDRP (student loan repayment) eligibility.
  • The Staff Psychiatrist conducts initial psychiatric evaluations, follow‑up visits, consultations, group therapy, medication management, crisis assessment, and intervention for Veterans.
  • Modalities of care include face‑to‑face and telemental health (TMH).
  • The incumbent may provide cross‑coverage to other clinical sites via telemental health as needed.
  • Responsible for psychiatric care in an outpatient setting, identifying Veterans' mental and medical needs, designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
  • Acts as medical subject‑matter expert, coordinates other health‑service personnel, resolves Veteran care problems, and educates Veterans and families.
  • Approximately 95 % of time devoted to patient care; remaining time for teaching, research, and administration.
  • Adhering to VACO, VISN, VATVCBHCS policies and medical‑staff bylaws, team‑based leadership, and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Maintaining excellent customer satisfaction and compliance, participating in performance improvement processes.
  • Work schedule:

    Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
