The Adult Services Associate provides responsive and friendly customer service while covering the Adult Services circulation desk; helping patrons with reference, readers’ advisory, check out, and library accounts; instructing patrons on the use of services, software, and equipment, including the makerspace; and assisting with Adult Services programming as assigned. This is an 18-hour-per-week, part-time, non-exempt position. Benefits include paid holidays and paid time off.
The Adult Services Associate reports to the Adult & Technical Services Manager.
- Fulfills all opening, closing, and day-to-day facility procedures
- Works circulation desk and all related duties, including troubleshooting minor computer and printer problems for patrons, shelving materials, and requesting and handling interlibrary loans
- Answers directional, general reference, and readers’ advisory questions from adult and youth patrons
- Assists patrons in the use of library-provided technology and online resources
- Handles small cash and credit card transactions
- Other duties as assigned
- Works closely with the Adult & Technical Services Manager to complement, support, supervise, moderate, or provide instruction as needed for assigned programs, including special one-time, regular recurring, and makerspace
- Creates instructional or promotional graphics and materials, as assigned
- Troubleshoots use of library-provided makerspace equipment
- Other duties as assigned
- Recommends purchases, weeds, and withdraws materials
- Processes new materials
- Coordinates, preps, and sets up collection displays
- Other duties as assigned
- Attends and participates in all staff and department meetings
- Attends educational workshops and additional trainings when possible
- Sorts mail and packages, verifies accuracy of received shipments
- Pairs and/or mails vendor checks and files paperwork appropriately
- Performs administrative duties as assigned

- Education:
Completion of some college or university courses preferred - Experience:
1-3 years’ library experience preferred - Skills:
Responsive to text and email. Microsoft Office, email, and familiarity with web-based searching and applications are required. Comfort with uncertainty. Understanding of library’s role in the community. Ability to work with the public. Ability to pass background checks including a credit check. Demonstration of an understanding of the importance of teamwork in a small library. Ability to multitask. Willingness to learn new things.
Organizational skills are a must. Experience with makerspace equipment and technology provides an advantage.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position for periods of time; move about inside the facility; and constantly operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a phone, a cash register, a copy machine, and printers. The employee is also regularly required to operate a variety of makerspace equipment, as well as move and lift the equipment.
The employee is regularly required to communicate information and ideas so others will understand and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. The employee must have the ability to observe details at close and far range. The employee must regularly retrieve from and replace items on high and low shelves. The employee must regularly set up and take down tables, chairs, and other furniture for library programs.
The employee must occasionally move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds and/or push carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
