Summary of PositionUnder general supervision provided by the Health Compliance Supervisor, the Environmental Health Specialist conducts health and safety inspections, enforces health and food safety codes, reviews plans for commercial food establishments and public swimming pools, and investigates food and water borne illnesses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Drive to and from assigned work locations.
- Complete routine health inspections of commercial food establishments and mobile food units, enforce ordinances, conduct re‑inspections, and provide safe food‑handling practices education.
- Implement the Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point approach to the food protection program.
- Investigate complaints; respond to and resolve customer inquiries.
- Assist in surveillance efforts in current health topics and ensure the Department utilizes the most current and effective techniques and procedures.
- Work rotating weekend schedule as needed; respond to emergency situations outside normal hours when required.
- Make recommendations to public and private industry representatives on methods to modify daily operations in accordance with current health codes.
- Maintain environmental surveys, inspection records, and action‑taken documentation; represent the City in court cases and hearings when necessary.
- Review plans and specifications of commercial food establishments, including restaurants, grocery stores, daycares, concession stands, and temporary establishments.
- Review plans and specifications for commercial swimming pools and spas.
- Assist with the development of departmental policies and procedures.
- Coordinate work activity with other federal, state, or local agencies.
- Assist with mosquito abatement program as needed.
- Prepare, process, and issue health notices.
- Maintain all relevant certifications and required continuing education units.
- Comply with all written City policies and procedures.
- Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and departmental attendance policies.
- Provide technical assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, and business owners on health, safety, and code requirements.
- Enter inspection results using an iPad and IG Inspect and IG Enforce applications.
- Work with files; may update files.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

- Identify methods and techniques to modify daily operations of public and private industry to comply with current health codes.
- Knowledge of Ener Gov software applications preferred.
- Proficiency in the use of mobile inspection equipment.
- Working knowledge of health and safety standards applicable to food handling, public pools, and mosquito control.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; skilled in applying established testing procedures for extracting food and water samples.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations and use technical devices such as computers, calculators, and test kits.
- Meet the City’s driving requirements.
- Obtain necessary continuing education units to retain certifications.
- Apply principles of persuasion and influence.
