Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE

To keep the District's vehicles and small engines in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles
  • Perform minor mechanical repairs
  • Do welding and minor bodywork
  • Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule: rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels
  • Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance
  • Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed
  • Demonstrate process of preventive maintenance and visual inspections to mechanic helpers
  • Perform preventive maintenance; including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules
  • Install GPS devices in District vehicles
  • Maintain records of fuel consumption and deliveries. Check fuel levels daily to facilitate timely ordering
  • Operate buses and other vehicles as needed
  • Work irregular hours as needed
Safety
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
Other
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Experience
  • Three to five years experience in small engine repair
  • Five years experience as a vehicle/auto mechanic
Requirements
  • Education – High School Diploma or GED
  • Special Knowledge/Skills – Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
  • Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Ability to operate bus
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to prepare written reports that are a necessary function of this assignment
  • Possess at least a Class C Texas driver's license and qualify for insurance with the district insurance carrier
