Job SummaryThe primary responsibility of this position is instruction and intervention with a specific student in a 1:1 capacity who requires special education or behavior intervention services. The staff member may also carry out program activities as scheduled by licensed personnel and provide instruction to individuals and small groups as directed. This position monitors student safety and behavior in various settings and fulfills a identified student’s needs as described in the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
The position ends when the student no longer requires a 1:1 assistant.
- Engage in behavior management activities as directed by licensed staff.
- Follow specific protocols, including physical restraint, when working with students.
- Document student progress to assist teachers in assessing educational plans and maintain progress reports.
- Assist students with daily tasks (eating, dressing, toileting, diapering) and health services (changing dressings, oxygen, insulin, nebulizers, walkers, wheelchairs, canes).
- Support students in developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Promote student safety by applying district management and safety guidelines.
- Monitor student activities in classrooms and playgrounds and intervene when safety or control issues arise.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Be familiar with school and district policies and procedures.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Maintain classroom equipment, materials and student files to ensure availability.
- Perform basic clerical tasks (record keeping, scheduling, copying) to support teachers.
- Assist other personnel as needed to support their work activities.
- Communicate with teachers, parents, and community agencies to evaluate student progress and implement objectives, protecting confidentiality.
- Participate in meetings and professional development activities.
- Assist with student transitions, including bus supervision and classroom transitions.
Job Requirements – Qualifications
- Experience with children with disabilities, particularly severely handicapped children with emotional and behavioral disorders.
- Completed associate’s degree or higher; at least two years of higher education study (≥72 college quarter hours).
- Oregon Department of Education Fingerprint Clearance.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports, and communicate effectively before groups.
- Problem‑solving and reasoning skills; ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic or scheduled instructions.
- Collaborative, conflict‑resolving, confidential, and team‑spirit skills; works well with children.
- Respectful, equitable working environment.
- Ability to work with a diverse population and protect confidential information.
- Computer skills (word processing, databases, Google Suite).
- Work effectively with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and attire.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Confine regularly with supervisor.
- Follow district policies and reasonable authority requests.
- Maintain confidentiality integrity for student, staff, and patron information.
Require regular speaking and hearing; frequently walks, sits, and uses hands for fine manipulation, handles or feels objects, reaches; occasionally stands, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. Must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
