Underwrite a profitable and growing book of business with acceptable loss and expense ratios, while maintaining good overall agency relationships. Support corporate goals and objectives.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Evaluate risks for acceptance, renewal, modification, or declination within established underwriting criteria and authority documents to produce an underwriting profit.
- Analyze underwriting information such as applications, change requests, inspections, credit reports, MVRs, cost estimators; evaluate alternative outcomes, make appropriate underwriting decisions and maintain accurate file documentation.
- Answer questions from agents and team members concerning risk analysis, eligibility, underwriting rules, rating and company practices.
- Evaluate underwriting results of the assigned territory and recommend corrective action; provide feedback for Product Managers on agency force evaluation and guideline development.
- Communicate with agents in a business‑like manner; explain reasons behind underwriting decisions; demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing conditions.
- Build professional relationships with agents, customers, and company personnel; use persuasion and influencing skills to encourage application submissions and business retention.
- Retrieve policy information on the computer and possess knowledge of systems and databases to address policy, coverage, and billing questions.
- Participate in marketing efforts, including agency visits, meetings, and training sessions.
- Complete special assignments as assigned.
- Develop strong knowledge of rating requirements and policy forms used within underwriting responsibilities.
- Demonstrate effective time management, organization, and computer skills.
- Possess good listening, decision‑making skills; detail oriented, accurate and efficient.
- Actively participate in team processes and provide excellent customer service.
- College bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least two years of underwriting experience with minimum level III underwriting authority for at least two lines of business.
- AINS designation required, with commitment to completing additional IIA or CPCU insurance courses.
- Required to complete Associate in Personal Lines Insurance (API) or Associate in Commercial Lines (AU) and at least one other insurance course within 48 months.
- Successful completion of Personal Lines section of CIC and Associate in Service (AIS) program also necessary.
- CPCU completion strongly encouraged.
