Part‑time position (24 hours weekly, 8 AM‑4:30 PM Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays) at Bon Secours.
Job SummaryThe Respiratory Care Practitioner I is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Performs respiratory care procedures including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education. Monitors patient response and makes recommendations to modify therapy based on assessment.
Essential Functions- Serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
- Assess patient’s physical status by inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, behavior, and reviewing records.
- Perform treatments per physician orders, explain therapy, modify procedures based on patient response.
- Determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommend methods to physician.
- Set up and maintain oxygen therapy modes.
- Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or aerosol therapy; document and observe vital signs, cough, dyspnea relief, and adverse reactions.
- Give postural drainage, vibration, percussion; check orders and x‑rays; auscultate before and after.
- Instruct patients/families on incentive spirometer, MDI, postural drainage, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, home aerosol therapy.
- Assist doctor with bronchoscopy and tracheostomy; manage tracheostomy tube changes and humidification.
- Procure sputum for culture and sensitivity or perform airway clearance.
- Evaluate normal and pathological blood and urine laboratory values.
- Perform arterial punctures and blood gas analysis.
- Assist with EKG placement and monitoring.
- Maintain respiratory equipment and supplies.
- Respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitations as required.
- Bachelor’s Degree related to Respiratory Therapy, Health Care, Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration (preferred).
- Current Respiratory Care License in the state of employment (required).
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed (required).
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred).
- BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required).
- ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association or Red Cross (preferred).
- PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred).
- Valid Driver's License (required for Home Care/DME).
- Previous working experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting (preferred).
- 6 months Respiratory Therapy experience in a general care area (preferred).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Effective interaction with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
- Customer service skills.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to receive feedback and interpret data.
- Accountability.
- Knowledge of non‑invasive respiratory therapy equipment.
- Therapeutic procedures: CPAP/BiPAP, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high‑flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, diagnostic testing.
- Understanding of EKGs and electronic monitoring.
- Experience with arterial blood gas punctures.
- Airway maneuvers, bedside pulmonary function, patient assessment, patient education.
- Knowledge of chest suction equipment and chest x‑ray interpretation.
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
