Part‑time position supporting Memorial Regional Medical Center (MRMC) in Mechanicsville, VA and our freestanding Emergency Department in Ashland, VA.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Mission or Director of Spiritual Care, the Chaplain II ministers to patients, families, and staff around religious and spiritual needs. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the chaplain provides spiritual care and emotional support within the context of illness, crisis, loss, and death, while modeling the Mission and core values of Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Functions
  • Recognizes the sacramental needs of the Catholic population.
  • Provides for religious and ritual needs of diverse faith groups.
  • Ministers to a diverse population in a non‑proselytizing manner, offering basic emotional and spiritual support to patients, visitors, community members, and associates.
  • Collaborates with team members and the interdisciplinary team, making appropriate referrals to serve those in care.
  • Employs advanced pastoral care and counseling techniques such as emotional processing, reframing, and facilitation of theological reflections.
  • Contributes a specialized perspective at clinical care conferences and provides consultation for cases involving significant relational, familial, religious, or cultural dynamics.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in conducting full‑spectrum spiritual care assessment and care planning.
  • Provides appropriate spiritual interventions in end‑of‑life and crisis situations (e.g., Code Blue, death, trauma).
  • Coordinates delivery of pastoral care resources for complex patient care situations and works with departmental leaders for referrals.
  • Offers Advanced Care Planning consultations and elicits care preferences, including Advanced Medical Directive documentation.
  • Communicates clinically relevant information in the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to benefit interdisciplinary care.
  • Applies knowledge of the Ethical and Religious Directives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and adheres to Bon Secours Mercy Health policies.
  • Available for 24/7 call with expectations for holidays and weekends.
Education
  • Master’s degree in Religious Studies, Divinity, Theology, or related field (required).
  • Doctoral degree in Theology or Philosophy (preferred).
Required Licensing & Certifications
  • 3 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) completed (required).
Experience
  • 1 year of experience as a Chaplain in a healthcare setting (required).
  • Ecclesial endorsement from church body to be involved in hospital ministry (required).
  • Completion of lay ministry or ordination process (preferred).

  • Active listening, empathy, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Clinical pastoral care, crisis counseling, and crisis intervention.
  • Collaboration, communication (verbal and written), presentation, and facilitation of theological reflections.
  • Teamwork, organization, planning, and relationship building.
  • Application of ethical practices, healthcare ethics, medical ethics, Catholic social teaching, and interfaith dialogue.
  • Abilities to lead and coordinate prayer and worship services, and teach diverse theology and ecclesiology.
