Provide analysis and support to assigned operational program area. To advance the development, integration, and support of innovative design technologies that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and quality of transportation project delivery. Support engineers, designers, project teams and internal and external customers by implementing and maintaining digital tools, workflows, and standards related to 3D design software and other emerging technologies. Collaborate across disciplines to ensure that VDOT remains at the forefront of design innovation, while aligning technology solutions with agency goals, industry best practices, and evolving infrastructure needs.
How you will contribute:- Design Technologies Support:
Serve as the technical support resource for all departmental CADD software applications, including but not limited to, Bentley design tools such as Open Roads, Open Bridge, and the Project Wise file management system. Duties include installing and configuring software, managing user accounts and access permissions, and ensuring operational functionality. Coordinate with technical staff and other division support teams to diagnose and resolve software, hardware, and system-related issues in a timely and efficient manner. - Helpdesk Support:
Manage and maintain support requests within the Design Technologies helpdesk system (database), including the entry, monitoring, and assessment of tickets submitted by both internal and external users. Diagnose and resolve issues as they are received to ensure support of all issues in a timely and efficient manner. Serve as backup Helpdesk Coordinator, providing administrative support and oversight of the Helpdesk system as required. - Technical Development:
Develop and maintain user-focused written communication materials, including job aids, training manuals, and presentations, to support the effective use of software applications. Ensure all documentation is regularly updated to reflect changes in software functionality and departmental processes, promoting consistent and accurate user support. - Vendor Coordination:
Coordinate and manage interactions with software vendors, including initiating support requests for vendor-specific technical issues and working directly with vendors to ensure timely and effective problem resolution. Collaborate with vendors to discuss new software initiatives, updates, and potential impacts—both positive and negative—on existing systems to support the department’s operational goals and technology strategy.
- Ability to audit digital records/accounts for system security requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Ability to create clear, concise, and accurate documentation for software updates, for integration into organizational policies and user manuals.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency business and technical staff, other governmental employees, and vendors.

- Ability to make presentations and conduct training.

- Knowledge of civil engineering practices and principles related to roadway design and transportation infrastructure.

- Knowledge of Construction methods and materials.

- Skill in the use of computers, software, and hardware applications.
- Skills in training and supporting others in the use of technical software, including the creation and use of documentation, job aids, and other learning materials.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field desired.
