DNV Energy Systems’ group has an exciting opportunity for a Power System Engineer (EMT Studies) in its Renewables & Power Grids service area. Our team provides creative, cost effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Engineer must demonstrate vision and drive and be passionate about contributing to the growth of the Power Systems Advisory business in North America.
The ideal candidate will contribute in delivering technical insights and providing customers with excellent customer service.
Location:
Hybrid schedule — typically three days per week from a DNV office or client location. Base location may be Dallas (TX), Austin (TX), Houston (TX), Oak Brook (IL), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), Medford (MA). This role may also be considered at other DNV offices within the US.
- Perform Electro-magnetic Transient (EMT) Studies such as sub synchronous resonance (SSR), control interaction (SSCI), ferro-resonance, temporary overvoltage (TOV), switching overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), harmonic, energization, etc.
- Develop/tune PSCAD models, perform PSCAD/PSSE model benchmarking analysis.
- Produce and/or review technical reports and presentations for external customers.
- Timely completion of projects assigned while meeting project quality and project budget.
- Stay up to date with relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NERC, CIGRE.
- Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of technical simulations.
- Contribute to the team’s research and innovative activities in terms of development of new techniques and/or analytical tools to enhance team performance in terms of efficiency and/or capability improvements.
- Cultivate customer relationships, technical advisory support for generations, and large load interconnections connecting to the transmission system.

For California, Washington, New York, Washington, D.C., Illinois, and Maryland: DNV provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. The starting pay range for this role is $80,000 - $135,000. For other locations, compensation varies based on position, tenure, location, and employee election.
About You – What is Required- Master’s degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in Power System and Control.
- Hands‑on experience with PSCAD software.
- Knowledge of inverter‑based resources (wind, solar, battery storage) and associated control.
- In‑depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy, small‑signal and large‑signal control stability.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal (written & verbal) skills, problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

- Active PE License.
- Doctorate degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems.
- Hands‑on experience performing EMT, SSR studies.
- Experience in scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation and data analysis.
- Demonstrable hands‑on experience with one or more power system analysis software packages including PSS/E, Dig Silent Power Factory, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN.
- Knowledge of ERCOT Electricity Market planning & interconnection practices.
- Knowledge of other Electricity Markets (such as PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISONE) planning & interconnection practices.
