As a Structural Field Engineer, you will play a significant part in planning, organizing, and implementing project engineering and project controls tasks. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in a team environment are critical to this position. We are looking for individuals with motivation and eagerness to expand their skillset in infrastructure construction.
District OverviewKiewit’s Southern California District is one of Kiewit’s leading infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil projects that include earth moving, water/wastewater, transportation, roadways, and power projects. Most of our work is concentrated in the Southern California region, with some work in Hawaii.
LocationKiewit’s Southern California District is based out of the Santa Fe Springs, CA office and supports projects throughout the Southern California region, building out project/construction schedules for all types of infrastructure work across the region.

- Field Engineering
- Interpret drawings and specifications for field crews and craft supervision.
- Perform quantity calculations by measuring materials and determining percentage of completed/installed work.
- Assist in preparing work plans and work packages.
- Assist in field surveying and work layout support including elevation, control points, and as‑built data compilation.
- Process and confirm daily labor timesheets.
- Prepare Job Hazard Analysis (JHA’s).
- Participate in jobsite safety reviews, toolbox meetings, mass safety meetings, and safety training.
- Order and schedule material deliveries.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate work groups on the jobsite.
- Supervise field operations.
- Office Engineering
- Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
- Conduct basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field operations.
- Assist engineers in gathering and preparing data for submittal or transmissions to customers, vendors, subcontractors, governmental agencies, and internal use.
- Participate in the preparation of purchase orders and subcontracts, performing minor solicitations and purchasing as requested.
- Schedule maintenance and perform updates as directed.
- Maintain basic project record‑keeping and correspondence functions, including daily reports, photographs, RFIs, and memorandums.
- Enter data into the job cost system and review cost reports with jobsite management.
- Assist in generating change orders and as‑built data to be reviewed by the Project Manager.
- Provide field support and supervise subcontractor operations.
- Estimating
- Review and analyze historical data relative to the project, incorporating appropriate production and cost assumptions in bid preparation.
- Complete a plan and specification review for assigned projects, assessing risk areas and notifying senior estimating staff.
- Complete material and quantity takeoffs according to bid documents.
- Bachelor’s degree in a construction‑related field of engineering or equivalent experience.
- At least two years of experience in the construction field.
- Working knowledge of scheduling (CPM), unit man‑hour performance, material control, estimating, and subcontracts.
- Experience with leadership and people management, strong verbal and written communication, planning, and organization skills.
- Regular, reliable attendance.
- Produce work productively and meet deadlines.
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others in a team environment.
- Perform work safely and effectively, following oral and written instructions, warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
- Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines; willing to work overtime and weekends as required.
- May work at various locations with varying conditions.
$90,000 – $110,000 (actual compensation may vary with education, experience, skill set, and/or location).
