GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIESThe Head Athletic Coach will supervise the athletic program for which assigned and coach their school's varsity team. The Head Coach will direct programs to instruct athletes on the fundamental skills, strategy, safety procedures, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. At the same time, the athletes shall receive instruction that will lead to the formation of moral values, pride in accomplishment, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
The Head Athletic Coach supervises the program’s Assistant Coaches assigned, participating athletes, managers, and student assistants.
This job description intends to give sufficient guidance to function. A coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment in cases not explicitly covered.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDThe Head Athletic Coach is responsible to the building principal and works cooperatively with the Coordinator of Secondary Athletics and the building Activities Coordinator.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES GENERAL- Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the program assigned.
- Knows Oregon School Activities Association rules and regulations as well as Southern Oregon Conference Guidelines; implements those same consistently and interprets them for staff.
- Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through appropriate channels.
- Works to increase morale and cooperation within the school's athletic program.
- Knows effective safety procedures in their sport, plans and implements a program of instruction in safe practices.
- Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs and conducts a clinic for the program assigned to staff.
- Trains and informs staff; encourages professional growth by attendance at clinics according to district clinic policy and funds available.
- Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and works cooperatively with the building principal to evaluate all assistants.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Principal and Coordinator of Secondary Athletics.
- Assists the Activities Director in scheduling and providing transportation. Checks the athletic schedule for conflicts and makes necessary confirmations.
- Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled athletic events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
- Is responsible to the principal for compliance with the school district and OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent forms, insurance waivers, and academic/residence eligibility.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and facilities.
- Advises the Activities Director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.
- Prepares the annual season summary after the sports season.
- Provides training rules and any other unique sports regulations to each athlete considered a participant.
- Gives constant attention to an athlete's grades and conduct.
- Supervises athletes before, during, and after practices, contests, or while traveling; provides guidance and safeguards each participant by their presence.
- Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Works cooperatively with the athletic trainer in injury, prevention, and the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
- Ensures completion of paperwork on all athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the appropriate office within 24 hours of the injury.
- Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Determines discipline following State, District, and School guidelines, policies, and procedures. Teaches athletes rules and procedures concerning due process when enforcing discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or ineligible for team rule infractions.
- Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
- Participates in budgeting by identifying equipment and supply specifications such as type, style, color, or technical information and seeking vendor cost estimates. The Head Coach is responsible for knowing the program's budget and operating within budget appropriations.
