Position Summary
The Maintenance Engineer – Electrical & Instrumentation is responsible for validating or engineering design via the management of change (MOC) process under Maintenance Engineering. This includes providing technical responses and performing modifications to electrical or instrumentation designs to support plant reliability.
The role supports monitoring of the plant reliability framework, which includes identifying reliability risks that could impact the plant or business operations, and delivering reliability strategies, analysis and solutions to measure and improve plant performance.
Position Responsibilities
Provide electrical or instrumentation designs for low risk modifications and upgrades made to the plant
Review and verify the electrical or instrumentation design integrity of low risk equipment
Support materials selection to minimize costs and maximize facility reliability and maintainability
Support Maintenance and Operations departments in regard to emergency changes and equipment maintenance issues
Support management requests related to electrical or instrumentation engineering issues
Utilize appropriate codes and standards, calculations, and specifications
Analyze asset performance to identify issues such as high cost of maintenance; confirming appropriate management strategies are in place for all equipment; and, effective use of predictive and other methods of investigation to ensure processes are in place to identify and isolate inherent reliability problems
Utilize the Management of Change (MOC) procedure to provide, manage and execute engineering solutions to equipment failures and other issues that impact plant reliability
Apply robust reliability analysis using data analysis tools (e.g. statistical modelling, reliability modelling and prediction, fault tree analysis, and Weibull analysis) and root cause analysis
Analyze plant reliability data, including both equipment and production data
Provide input into specific risk assessments, including both equipment and system risks
Work collaboratively across all departments to determine asset performance
Develop, maintain and continuously improve systems to determine and measure the reliability of plants, equipment, components and processes
Measure and report overall equipment effectiveness
Identify other parameters that affect and impact the operating condition, reliability and cost of assets
Provide technical support to all departments in the area of asset management to improve both plant overall and equipment reliability and availability performance
Apply value analysis to repair/replace, repair/redesign, and manufacture/purchase decisions, as appropriate, using reliability tools (e.g. future reliability and availability performance)
Collaborate with Technical team, as well as Project personnel, to ensure that reliability and maintainability of new and/or modified equipment installations is understood and meets requirements over the entire life cycle of the asset
Collaborate with the Maintenance and Technical Team in developing and actioning the annual department plan; ensure individual activities align with the Medicine Hat business plan and Corporate Strategy
Lead and/or collaborate on global or local projects
Position Qualifications
Experience and Technical Knowledge/Skills
Undergraduate degree with a major in an engineering discipline required.
Minimum of 8 years related industrial experience, with at least 2 years in a reliability related role
Professional Engineer (P. Eng)
Experience with incident investigation (e.g. Tap Root)
Experience with reliability analysis/modelling is an asset
Six years’ experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering preferred
Familiarity with industry codes and regulations, as well as electrical and instrumentation engineering practices
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
