ELS Substitute Instructor

The ELS Substitute Associate Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching and evaluating assigned classes in accordance with the ELS curriculum, primarily to adult students, with assistance from the Academic Director, Instructional Specialists and Senior Instructors. Responsibilities also include maintaining student class records, fulfilling administrative duties as required, and participating in professional development activities such as workshops, meetings and assisting Instructors. The role is typically called in to substitute in emergency situations for less than a full day.
Job Duties- Teach SSP (Structure/Speaking Practice), Vocabulary Enrichment, Reading/Writing, LTC (Language Technology Center) and/or Skills Enhancement Classes (SECs) as assigned.
- Prepare lesson plans, exercises and tests.
- Test, evaluate and counsel the student regarding classroom performance.
- Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Coordinate instruction, attendance records and evaluation with other teachers.
- Adhere to Center and Company policy and procedures, and communicate local policy to Associate Instructors.
- Complete administrative paperwork as required or requested.
- Maintain performance and attendance records.
- Maintain Center resource materials and files.
- Observe other teachers, as suggested by the AD, for professional development and to be observed in all facets of the program.
- Participate in administrative meetings and professional development activities.
- Participate in the employee evaluation process (e.g., classroom observations, follow‑up discussions and the performance appraisal process).
- Provide Associate Instructors with assistance.
- Develop and/or refine teaching materials at the local level.
- Assist during Instructor’s scheduled class hours and, when requested, disseminate information about after‑class activities.
- Contribute to the maintenance of neat classrooms and a neat staff workroom and lounge.
- Substitute in emergency situations for less than a full day when there are no reasonable alternatives available to the AD.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s or better in English or a related field.
- A minimum of 6 months of ELS teaching experience for those who do not have an MA in TESOL or CELTA.
- Certificate or better in CELTA or a related field.
- Certificate or better in TESOL or a related field.
- Master’s or better in Applied Linguistics or a related field.
- Master’s or better in TESOL or a related field.
