Northrop Grumman’s Aeronautics Systems sector is seeking a Principal Communications Engineer to join our team in defining the future. The selected engineer will be a member of an interdisciplinary team on a key effort to develop novel and innovative solutions to advanced technical problems. Responsibilities include developing communications subsystems, analyzing performance, managing requirements and interfaces, and verifying/validating all allocated requirements.
Responsibilities- Support development and integration of communications subsystems and components to meet platform mission objectives
- Requirements development, analysis, maturation and implementation translating customer requirements into hardware and software specifications
- Perform MBSE and capture requirements, interfaces, behaviors, structures and para metrics
- Perform performance and functional analyses
- Conduct detailed trade studies
- Perform risk analysis and develop mitigation plans and track to closure
- Collaborate with engineers and program stakeholders
- Develop and maintain supplier documentation, performance-based specifications, and statements of work
- Technical management of program strategic partners and suppliers, including development, acquisition, acceptance, qualification, system integration and test support
- Review supplier documents and support technical interchange meetings and design reviews
- Identify, plan, and execute informal and formal testing of subsystem requirements in lab; troubleshoot hardware in lab
- Perform aircraft ground and flight test on subsystems to validate and verify subsystem requirements and sell‑off
- Support technical discussions with the customer and maintain daily interaction with management, external personnel, customers, and sub‑teams
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of related professional/military engineering experience; or Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related experience; or Ph.D. and 1 year of related experience
- Transfer and maintain a final adjudicated Government Secret clearance, and any program access required within a reasonable timeframe
- Knowledge of electromagnetics in the RF spectrum (VHF through Ka bands) and ability to design, select and characterize RF components
- Experience in one or more of the following: designing, integrating, testing, installing, operating LOS and BLOS communication systems in airborne military applications; voice, military and network waveforms; performance assessment through link margin and antenna pattern analyses; cryptographic implementations; RF antenna and component design and performance analysis; cosite analysis
- Demonstrated problem‑solving ability and data analysis experience
- Knowledge of systems engineering design methods, including requirements analysis and flow‑down, specification derivation and interface control documentation
- Interpersonal communication, presentation skills, verbal and written communication skills
- Experience designing, developing, integrating, and/or testing EW or radar subsystems for airborne platforms
- Experience in model‑based systems engineering using Cameo or similar SysML tools
- Experience in performance analysis using MATLAB and Excel or similar tools
