Job SummaryFIREFIGHTER/EMT salary is $53,498.35 annually, which includes F.L.S.A. Additional monetary incentives may apply. Typically shift work: 24 hours on/48 hours off. Performs experienced protective service work controlling, extinguishing, and preventing fires and performing Basic Life Support at emergency scenes. All applicants must not have been users of tobacco products for at least one (1) year immediately preceding their application for employment as a firefighter with Brevard County Fire Rescue, and shall be required, as an absolute condition of continued employment, to refrain from smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or use of any type of tobacco products of any kind (including smoking cessation products), at all times, whether on or off duty.
In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man‑made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
- Must possess a valid CPR card from an approved provider and a valid State of Florida EMT Certification on the date of written testing, both maintained during employment.
- Must possess a Florida State Fire Fighter Certificate of Compliance or Letter of Completion from the State of Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training on the date of written testing.
- Must possess a valid Florida Driver's license on the date of written testing and maintain it during employment.
- Copies of all required certifications and licenses must be presented at the time of written test administration.
- Applicants will be required to take and pass a written fire and medical exam.
- Physical Abilities Test:
Submit either a valid National Testing Network Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) completed within one year of the date of the written exam or perform and successfully complete the Brevard Physical Abilities Test (BPAT). BPAT is offered at no cost. - Veterans of the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge entitled to Veteran's Preference under Florida Statute, Chapter 295, must submit applicable DD‑214, valid military certification, and/or military discharge papers to Human Resources by the date of written testing. Preference points will be added to a passing written test score.
- Must successfully complete a criminal, driver’s license, and personal background investigation conducted by Brevard County or another agency, including Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check administered by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
- Must successfully complete a physical examination in accordance with the most current NFPA 1582 guidelines and be found fit for duty.
Information regarding the written test date, time, and location will be emailed to qualified applicants two (2) weeks prior to testing dates, which are currently scheduled for Friday, January 30, 2026, and Saturday, January 31, 2026. The tentative hiring date for candidates who successfully complete all required pre‑employment testing for this hiring process is Monday, March 30, 2026.
