Patient Financial Advocate - Oncology at Health First

POSITION SUMMARY The Patient Financial Advocate position will be responsible for supporting patients and families by answering questions regarding their insurance benefits and providing them with their out-of-pocket cost responsibility. This position helps access financial resources for pharmaceutical copays, obtain free medication and/or apply for grants through not-for-profit organizations.

Primary Accountabilities
  • Develop an understanding of current health insurance and medical prescription benefit coverage and apply that knowledge to support patient care.
  • Cultivate relationships with patient assistance programs to secure funding for medications and treatments, e.g., manufacturer programs and/or other assistance program’s relationships.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, physicians, advocacy funded programs and other financial assistance programs.
  • Assist with program enrollment and process applications by completing applications with patient information with complete confidentiality. Enroll members on-site or by calling patients or designated family members.
  • Serve as a liaison between the business office and patients for all billing questions and concerns.
  • Address problems and concerns related to medical and/or other financial needs for patients and families. This includes but is not limited to assistance with medications, transportation, nutrition, utilities, rent, etc.
  • Navigate multiple systems to ensure the resources provided best fit the patients’ needs.
  • Provide information to patients and families regarding their medical prescription benefits, including out-of-pocket costs.
  • Maintain professional relationships and convey information to authorized individuals.
  • Maintain files, process incoming calls, emails and provide other general support to patients and providers.
  • Resolve problems/issues correctly and independently.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school or equivalent
  • Work Experience:

    2 years’ experience working in the healthcare field.
  • Licensure:
    None required
  • Certification:
    None required
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
    Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Strong communication skills and professional presence.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize to maximize quality, value, and service.
  • Ability to adapt to a potentially rapidly changing environment or work process.
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.

  • Work Experience:

    2 years’ experience working with patient financial assistance.

  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
    Medical Benefit Terminology.
  • Ability to guide patients and families to best-fit patient financial services.
  • Proven effective outreach to current resources/programs and patient financial resources.
  • Experience interacting with Non-For-Profit foundations, Manufacturer programs and state programs.
  • Comprehensive and expressive communication skills, both verbal and written.
Physical Requirements
  • Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, stooping.
  • Long periods of computer time or at workstation.
  • Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
  • May be exposed to inside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and/or low to moderate noise.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
  • Workspace may vary from open to confined.
  • May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
