Who We Are

The Activity Therapy Department of Circles of Care provides activity therapy services to patient populations receiving psychiatric treatment. Services are offered in the inpatient adult and children’s units. The department focuses on applying activity‑based therapy to improve skills, behavior, and knowledge necessary for effective functioning in daily living situations. Group topics and modalities are chosen to support each person’s healthy goals and areas of meaning, providing ongoing gratification of needs and a sense of achievement.

Activity Therapy services are available seven days per week, directly and through consultation with other unit staff, with the primary mode of intervention being group facilitation. The activity schedule is coordinated with other therapies that occur on the unit.

• Provide activity therapy services to all patients admitted to psychiatric units, improving skills, behaviors, and knowledge to more effectively manage life problems and situations.
• Offer a variety of therapeutic and rehabilitative activities to assist patients in developing and maintaining adaptive skills.
• Provide leisure skill activities that enable patients to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes about meaningful leisure involvement.
• Ensure a professional program consisting of goal‑oriented, purposeful activity components under qualified supervision.
• Deliver quality patient care by following hospital and department standards, adhering to performance standards, and participating in performance improvement.
• Enhance and encourage the patient’s maximum functional potential.
• Promote health and wellness.
• Ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and personnel through risk reduction and management.
• Function as an integral member of the healthcare team and coordinate care with other services.
• Serve as a patient advocate.
• Expand staff knowledge base and incorporate current trends in healthcare practice through continued education.

• Under the supervision and direction of an Activity Therapist, plan and implement activity‑based groups and individual activities to maximize client participation using a variety of modalities.
• Assist Activity Therapists in planning new activity projects and ideas.

Applicants must have a strong desire to work in a mental health setting.

• Activity Therapy Assistant – individuals involved in training to become an OTA, or who have completed a basic education course for activity professionals, and/or have college courses in a mental healthcare‑related field.
• Individuals with a strong interest in mental health and experience in group facilitation will also be considered.
