Job InformationOpen to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This is a temporary, part-time (20-40 hrs per week) non-represented position (no union affiliation).
This job will end approximately March 29, 2009.
This position is part of a program designed to enhance the appearance of the People Mover bus stops. Under supervision, the General Helper II performs grounds preparation/landscaping; plants and cares for flowers; lawn maintenance, construction work to include but not limited to: constructing planters; cleanup and repair of vandalism; trash collection, some painting; some masonry/brick work; surface and subsurface installation of benches, trash cans, snow and ice removal, field problem solving and other related duties as assigned.
This position is labor intensive and will require the applicant to work and drive in all weather conditions. This position requires some limited supervisory duties.
- Performs a variety of routine tasks, under immediate supervision, for field operations throughout the community.
- Measures, cuts, trims and installs caulking, weather stripping, sheet rock and similar materials.
- Assists in hanging or replacing doors and windows and patching walls and foundations on assigned facilities as appropriate.
- Learns, through direct supervisory participation on the job, to acquire proficiency in the tools used and techniques applied.
- Ensures appropriate access to Municipal facilities and facility control.
Performs Other Related Duties As Required.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / PreferencesHigh school graduation, GED, or the equivalent; OR six months general work experience ; OR completion of a basic vocational training course and six months of experience at the General Helper I level with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere. Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Prefer: applicants with experience in a work atmosphere such as a gas station/garage, paint shop, supply or stock room or lumber yard where familiarity is gained in the use of common hand and power tools; or completion of a basic vocational training course in mechanics fundamentals or fundamentals of the building trades.
Prefer applicants who have demonstrated work experience with tools or have completed a course in basic tool safety. This position may require lifting up to 60 pounds or more.
Prefer applicants with experience driving in winter conditions.
Prefer applicants with some supervisory experience.
If you are selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant’s Alaska Driver’s License and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver’s License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
Additional Important InformationKnowledge of: use of common hand tools and standard safety precautions; common home insulation products.
Ability to: assist in routine dwelling weatherization tasks; follow oral and written instructions; ask questions and elicit information; learn operating policies, procedures and practices.
