Financial Counselor
Location: Onsite at Melrose/Wakefield Hospital.
Hours: 40 hours per week;
Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
This role focuses on revenue cycle operations such as billing, collections, and payment processing. It also performs patient financial services duties, including facilitating reimbursement for clinical services, submitting claims to insurers, following up on claims, and handling appeals for non‑clinical denials. The role supports daily business activities in a hands‑on environment, with most time spent delivering support services under supervision.
Job OverviewThe position coordinates insurance verification and financial counseling for all patients within Tufts Medicine, covering outpatient, inpatient, and ED patients. It assists and educates uninsured and underinsured patients through benefit acquisition so they can access needed care and ensures reimbursement for the services provided.
Duties and Responsibilities- Ensure appropriate demographic and insurance information is captured on each inpatient admission and verify eligibility by the next business day.
- Identify Medicaid‑eligible patients and complete Medicaid applications, including interviewing family members or professional agencies as needed, and verifying assets and income.
- Meet with patients in the ED or inpatient care setting.
- Communicate effectively and timely with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Collaborate with Case Management, Social Work, MDs, and other clinical team members.
- Document all work in EMR.
- Follow applications from submission to final decision, updating EMRs and communicating steps to patients/families.
- Assist patients with enrollment in Managed Care/ACO plans, Health Connector, employer‑sponsored insurance/COBRA, or Medicare plans.
- Assist patients in applying for Tufts Medicine Financial Assistance, tracking application to determination.
- Assist patients in applying for disability benefits when applicable.
- Monitor EPIC work queues and meet daily/weekly productivity standards.
- Escalate issues to leadership in a timely manner.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of hospital/health‑care experience in Patient Access.
- Certification in the Certified Accessibility Coordinator (CAC) within 4 weeks of hire.
- Associate’s degree.
- Frequent sitting, occasional standing and walking, lifting 5-10 lbs.
- Mental demands intense at times with concurrent multifaceted projects.
- Manual dexterity required to operate a computer keyboard or related equipment.
- Requires ability to see computer screen, monitoring equipment, and reports.
- Knowledge of hospital and medical terminology and experience in medical billing.
- Familiarity with third‑party plans and medical billing.
- Experience with hospital information systems.
Pay Range: $17.57 – $21.96 per hour.
