About the role

The Embedded Firmware Engineer will drive the design, development, and integration of embedded firmware and hardware for advanced smart home and IoT products in the residential electronics market. This role centers on creating and optimizing intelligent wiring devices—including connected electrical receptacles, lighting controls, circuit breakers, and other IoT-enabled components. Responsibilities cover the entire product lifecycle: requirements definition, firmware architecture, coding, testing, release management, and manufacturing support.

The ideal candidate will play a key role in developing innovative, connected solutions that deliver high performance, reliability, and interoperability with leading smart home platforms, while ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain firmware for embedded systems across both new and existing product lines.
  • Evaluate marketing and engineering requirements to assess the technical feasibility of proposed software solutions.
  • Collaborate with product managers, project leads, and cross‑functional teams to resolve technical challenges and deliver optimized firmware designs.
  • Create detailed technical specifications, define test plans, and establish validation criteria for embedded products.
  • Develop and document software architecture, including block diagrams, object code, and system‑level design using input from engineering teams.
  • Support the fabrication and testing of engineering prototypes, ensuring alignment with design intent and performance goals.
  • Drive process improvements to accelerate time‑to‑market for both new and updated products.
  • Contribute to additional engineering projects and initiatives as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Proficiency in C programming for embedded systems, with experience in developing efficient, low‑level firmware.
  • Working knowledge of Python scripting and Linux‑based development environments is a plus.
  • Familiar with industry‑standard tools and methodologies for embedded hardware and software implementation.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting schematics and PCB layouts, with the ability to troubleshoot hardware‑level issues and perform board bring‑up.
  • Solid understanding of RTOS (Real‑Time Operating System) concepts, including event‑driven architecture and real‑time firmware design.
  • Creative and innovative in product design, capable of taking concepts from initial prototype through to production release.
  • Highly adaptable and self‑motivated, with strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills in fast‑paced engineering environments.
  • Strong debugging critical thinking.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 0-2 years of hands‑on experience in embedded systems engineering, including both hardware and software development for new product designs. Prior internship experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in using hardware debugging tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Skilled in firmware development for 16‑bit and 32‑bit microcontrollers, including ARM Cortex‑M processors.
  • Understanding of communication protocols such as CAN, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), UART, SPI, and I2C.
  • Experience with wireless technologies including BLE, Matter, Thread, Zig Bee, Z‑Wave, and Wi‑Fi is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with product development for applications in IoT, automotive, consumer electronics, or industrial automation is a plus.
Travel
  • Up to 10% travel may be required.
