Pay Range

Summary

The Lt. Col. Luke Weathers – Jr. – VAMC in Memphis – TN is recruiting for a Gastroenterologist to serve as a full‑time Specialty Care physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Specialty Care and is responsible for assuring the most effective delivery of state‑of‑the‑art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

Qualifications
  • United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
  • Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a VA approved school
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA, or other residency with 5 years of U.S. practice)
  • PRPs eligible as physicians currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA program, must be fully licensed and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Completion of residency in internal medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine preferred)
  • Fellowship in gastroenterology (American Board of Internal Medicine – Specialty Board in Gastroenterology preferred)
  • Proficiency in colonoscopy and related endoscopic procedures
  • Eligibility for academic appointment at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center
  • Current certification in BLS/CPR
  • Physical requirements:

    moderate lifting (15‑25 lbs), moderate carrying (15‑25 lbs), straight pulling, pushing (up to 2‑3 hours), reaching above shoulder, walking (up to 1‑2 hours), kneeling (up to 1‑2 hours), repeated bending (1‑2 hours), rapid mental and muscular coordination, vision and hearing as specified
Duties
  • Clinical practice; supervising and teaching gastroenterology fellows, residents, and medical students
  • Providing consultation on endocrine disease states for diagnosis and treatment in inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Sharing attending call responsibilities with other endocrinologists for nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Rounding with team (fellows, residents, medical students) in inpatient settings
  • Educating and training medical students, residents, and gastrointestinal fellows through bedside rounds, inter‑disciplinary team rounds, didactic sessions, and Grand Rounds presentations
  • Performing direct care in gastroenterology for inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Participating in committees and work groups as requested by supervisor
  • Performing endoscopic procedures (colonoscopy and upper endoscopy) in the VA gastroenterology lab
  • Attending gastroenterologist for the inpatient gastroenterology consultation service
  • Supervising GI fellows in outpatient clinics
  • Taking night and weekend call in rotation with other gastroenterologists, including emergency procedures in ICU, ER, or OR as required
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervising physician
