The Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of Memphis invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor for the Academic Year. This is a full-time, nine-month academic appointment. Applicants must possess a PhD, or be at the ABD stage, in City and Regional Planning or a similar field by commencement of employment, and have a clear research agenda.
The Department is interested in strengthening our teaching and research in the following areas:
- Historic/ cultural/ neighborhood preservation
- Graphic design and visualization techniques for planners
- Participatory action research
- Feminist urban planning/ Gender and feminist approaches to urban form
Candidates must also be able to teach general planning seminars from among our core courses (e.g., Land Use Planning, Site Planning, Land Use Controls, Planning Theory, Planning the American City) as well as applied planning studios. In addition to these teaching responsibilities, the candidate hired will be asked to contribute to the Department’s ongoing student advising, capstone supervision, and community outreach activities within their area of expertise.
The candidate will also have the opportunity to work with doctoral students in the interdisciplinary Urban Affairs PhD program. The University of Memphis is a public, urban-serving Carnegie R1 University. The strengths of the Department of City and Regional Planning include interdisciplinary connections, an active engaged scholarship agenda built on community partnerships, and international opportunities. Our department offers a PAB-accredited Master of City and Regional Planning degree and is affiliated with a new interdisciplinary PhD program in Urban Affairs.
We are housed in the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy
, which provides a hub for collaboration and diverse disciplinary perspectives necessary for effective comprehensive metropolitan action. Our faculty members have active, funded research partnerships with colleagues across campus. Additionally, our partnerships and community engagement efforts extend beyond our borders through an annual two-week summer study abroad program in Sicily, Italy.
