School Psychologist

School Psychologist – 12‑Month Position

The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide a range of services to promote mental health, emotional/behavioral functioning and educational progress for all students with and without disabilities. The position is responsible for evaluating students for special services; recommending and coordinating services with teachers, parents and others as appropriate; providing therapeutic and consultative services; maintaining accurate and up-to-date case records, and performing related professional and administrative work as required.

The position works independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

• Processes student referrals, reviews and/or collects data for assessment and planning and conducts parent‑teacher consultation to improve student performance.
• Consults and collaborates with the Student Support Team to design interventions, facilitate students' learning, track progress and promote social‑emotional adjustment through direct or indirect intervention strategies.
• Administers, interprets and scores intelligence, aptitude, achievement and other psychological tests; evaluates students for suspected disabilities; prepares diagnostic reports recommending interventions and/or disability determination; communicates and interprets evaluation results to parents and teachers.
• Participates in IEP and 504 program meetings.
• Makes recommendations for instructional programming, character education and other classroom strategies based on theoretical models of school psychology.
• Provides therapeutic and consultative services to students and families as needed, including individual and group counseling, family counseling, social skills training and behavior management counseling.
• Assists families and schools in dealing with crises associated with personal or school tragedy, natural disasters and related incidents.
• Observes students in the classroom setting; helps to solve conflicts and problems in learning and adjustment.
• Prepares and submits accurate and complete documentation of all assigned cases.
• Provides prevention services targeted toward at‑risk individuals as well as school‑wide populations or problems.
• Maintains awareness and expertise in current professional research, trends and methodologies as they apply to school psychological services; attends training, conferences and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
• Adheres to the code of ethics of the National Association of School Psychologists and/or American Psychological Association, and guidelines of the Tennessee Association of School Psychologists.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Counseling or Clinical Psychology or other related field and one (1) year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education, training or experience. Must meet eligibility requirements for licensure;
Tennessee Board of Examiners in Psychology licensure at the psychological examiner level and/or licensure as a school psychologist through the Tennessee Department of Education. Valid State Driver’s License.

This School Psychologist position reports to the Memphis Shelby County Schools Mental Health Department.
