Position Overview

We are seeking a detail‑oriented and motivated Soil Laboratory Technician I to join our team and support geotechnical and construction materials testing projects. This role focuses on soil sample preparation, classification, and laboratory testing to ensure materials meet project specifications and industry standards. As a Soil Lab Technician, you will work in a controlled laboratory environment performing standardized soil tests, maintaining accurate data, and supporting engineers and project teams with high‑quality results.

This position plays an essential role in delivering reliable information used for design, quality control, and construction decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine soil laboratory testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and other applicable standards (e.g., moisture content, Atterberg limits, grain size analysis, compaction, and soil classification tests).
  • Prepare, label, organize, and process incoming soil samples to ensure proper traceability and integrity throughout the testing process.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain soil‑testing equipment, reporting any maintenance needs or equipment issues promptly.
  • Accurately record, analyze, and report test results, ensuring complete, organized, and error‑free documentation.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well‑organized laboratory, following all internal quality control procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with lab supervisors, project managers, and field personnel regarding test status, timelines, and any discrepancies or technical concerns.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of samples, equipment, and materials.
Ideal Candidate
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow standardized testing procedures with consistency and accuracy.
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment with repetitive tasks that require precision and organization.
  • Interest in geotechnical engineering, construction materials, soil science, or related fields.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality assurance, and data integrity.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical coursework in engineering, geology, construction science, or a related field preferred.
  • 0–3 years of experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical laboratory work, or a related field (prior laboratory experience preferred but not required).
  • Commitment to workplace safety, following OSHA, company, and laboratory safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Basic computer proficiency, with experience in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and Field Data Collection (FDC) software preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret procedures, manuals, technical documents, and reports related to construction materials testing and laboratory protocols.
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, field personnel, and clients to carry out instructions and report findings.
  • Strong organizational, time‑management, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Detail‑oriented and quality‑focused, ensuring accuracy in sample preparation, testing procedures, and data documentation.
  • Ability to work independently within the limitations of experience, using initiative to solve routine lab challenges.
