Ambulance Driver - Non-EMT Driver

Job Summary

Provide efficient and timely transportation of sick and injured patients to medical facilities, nursing homes, and appointments for Basic Life Support calls only, following local, state, national, and Acadian Ambulance standards.

Special Notation

While operating an ambulance, the Driver must be paired with a medical provider having at least an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. The EMT rides in the patient compartment with all patients. “Shuttle vehicle” is used interchangeably with “ambulance” when the Driver is operating a shuttle vehicle for non-emergency, ambulatory patients.

Duties and Responsibilities

Drive ambulance in Basic Life Support (BLS) setting only, ensuring safe and efficient transport of ill or injured persons to the hospital for medical attention.

Provide transportation for convalescent patients to and from nursing homes, medical facilities, and appointments; BLS setting only.

Assist in handling patients to and from the ambulance.

Assist EMT or Paramedics in transferring patients to receiving personnel at the destination.

After transport, perform all duties that place the ambulance and equipment back in service, including sanitizing the vehicle and equipment, removing soiled linens and contaminated supplies, etc.

Inspect the ambulance and report deficiencies for repair; check and replace or refill fuel, oil, transmission fluid, coolant, wiper fluid levels, etc., as necessary.

Operate the ambulance safely and efficiently, following company driving guidelines, ensuring the safety or condition of occupants and vehicle is not compromised.

Complete assigned ambulance duties such as washing, waxing, interior and exterior cleaning, etc., as required.

Perform other driving-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Current and valid state‑issued driver’s license (equivalent to a Louisiana Class “D” license).

Ability to read, write and communicate professionally and effectively with patients, employees and managers.

Knowledge of company protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies related to driving, patient information (HIPAA), lifting and body mechanics, etc.

Minimum of one year of driving experience.

Ability to drive large vehicles in normal and adverse conditions.

Ability to determine fastest and safest routes utilizing company‑provided GPS devices.

Physical Demands

Must perform strenuous physical requirements, including lifting and moving heavy equipment and patients in various environmental conditions.
Must respond quickly to ambulance calls and access patients in difficult terrain and dangerous environments.
Must climb stairs and work in close, dangerous environments such as damaged vehicles and structures on fire.
Must carry heavy equipment and patients.
Must have correctable vision that permits safe operation of emergency vehicles, reading of gauges, fine print, and figures associated with driving.
Must have adequate hearing to receive and relay information from dispatchers and other emergency personnel.
Must be able to speak clearly and audibly in loud conditions, and communicate effectively in distracting environments.

Vision Requirements

Color Vision – ability to identify and distinguish colors.
