The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Responsibilities include determining animal requirements, conducting examinations, assisting during surgery, nursing care, feeding, maintaining supplies and equipment, overseeing triage, discharging patients, and maintaining medical records.
Key Responsibilities- Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews, reviewing care plans and records, completing laboratory tests and studies, and diagnostic imaging.
- Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medications, vaccines, and bandaging wounds.
- Support patient examinations and operations by assembling required supplies, securing patients for examination rooms, restraining patients, and aiding the veterinarian.
- Apply full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration to provide excellent pet care.
- Obtain and verify medication orders.
- Ensure patients have food and water, clean their rooms, cages, and equipment, and observe patients for clinical signs of disease.
- Fill prescriptions and administer medications, documenting, logging, and securing controlled drugs.
- Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing instruments, sanitizing holding spaces, storing supplies, and following legal regulations.
- Document patients’ conditions, reactions, and changes in the database in an accurate and timely manner.
- Communicate with pet owners about patient status as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain equipment, troubleshoot breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance, and call for repairs.
- Maintain inventory, place orders, verify receipts, and manage supplies.
- Participate in educational opportunities and read professional journals.
- Release pets to owners clean and groomed as directed.
- Carry out oral and written directions and perform other duties as assigned by manager or practice.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two or more years of experience with veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients.
- Veterinary assistant or veterinary technician with understanding of kennel shift rotations.
- Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be considered.
- At least two years of VA/VT experience.
