The General Mechanic/Service Shop Technician is responsible for setting up, repairing, servicing, diagnosing, performing preventive maintenance, and installing replacement parts on Caterpillar diesel‑powered construction equipment. The position is a skilled technician role that works largely independently or with guidance from service mentors. The technician reports to a Service Shop Manager and serves customers located in company service shops.
Basic Requirements- Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred. High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two or more years of hands‑on equipment and/or engine experience, diagnostics and troubleshooting experience working diesel‑powered construction equipment or truck engines.
- Able to work standard five‑day work schedules, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as required.
- Must possess a complete set of basic mechanical hand tools, including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
- Must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, adaptability, and a strong customer service focus.
- Demonstrates a sense of urgency and self‑initiative, and the personal drive to be successful.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrate technical knowledge of construction equipment and/or engine mechanical failures.
- Demonstrated analytical problem‑solving skills.
- Possess and maintain a current, valid state driver’s license. CDL may be required for some field positions.
- Read and interpret technical instruction, service and safety manuals, and company policies and procedures.
- Work with mechanical, hydraulic, and electric/electronic schematics and wiring diagrams; demonstrate proficiency in the use of test equipment.
- Perform high‑quality repair service on equipment and engines, responding to customer needs in a positive, safe, and timely manner, ensuring maximum value for work performed.
- Follow all company and customer safety rules, maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area, and fully participate in accident prevention and safety improvement activities.
- Wear required personal protective equipment, including protective glasses, gloves, clothing, and footwear as required by the job.
- Respond to all customer requests in a professional, courteous, timely, and responsive manner; maintain a clean, professional personal appearance at all times.
- Assist management and colleagues by keeping the manager continually apprised of customer questions and problems when necessary.
- Demonstrate honesty, integrity, respect, and a positive attitude; maintain ownership of assigned tasks and adhere to all company policies and procedures.
- Work independently or as part of a team, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and meet all eligibility requirements to drive company vehicles when necessary.
- Occasionally lift up to 50‑80 pounds and perform other physical tasks required for the position.
