Substitute Assistant Teacher

Essential Functions:

• Support the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum focused on learning foundations that connect to children’s interests and promote positive development.
• Create intentional, enriched, and supportive learning environments that provide age‑appropriate experiences for all children.
• Establish authentic, culturally responsive relationships with children, families, and the center community.
• Maintain a healthy and safe environment by ensuring proper supervision, positive interactions, healthy habits, and compliance.
• Collaborate with coworkers, aligning workplace values and experience to deliver high‑quality programs.

All teaching staff demonstrate behaviors essential for successful programs and environments:

• Positive interactions with children and youth.
• Maintain kind, respectful, and safe emotional/physical environments.
• Be on time and present on a regularly scheduled basis.
• Be physically and mentally capable of interacting with children up to 13 years of age, meeting all needs and ensuring safety.
• Implement safety guidelines; report health & safety incidents; remain calm during emergencies, providing first aid as needed.

Physical &

Environmental Conditions:

• Identify and remove hazards, such as setting up cones to limit play areas, to maintain a safe environment.
• Comfortable with occasional loud noise during classroom activities.
• Comfortable with frequent bending, lifting, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
• Lift, carry, and hold objects up to 15 lbs individually or as a team (e.g., equipment carts, emergency backpacks, food coolers, furnishings).
• Work inside and outside the classroom under all weather conditions safe for children.
• Traverse various terrains (grass, blacktop, dirt) and heights (ladders, playgrounds) as needed.
• Adapt to children’s physical levels (sitting, kneeling, squatting) for activities and problem‑solving interactions.
• Supervise field trips to destinations such as aquatic parks, beaches, and trampoline parks.

Qualifications &

Experience:

Assistant teachers provide classroom support under the direction of senior staff. This entry‑level role requires the following education and experience:

• 6 post‑secondary semester units (or equivalent) in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field with a passing grade of C‑ or better, OR a regional occupation program certificate accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
• 6 months of experience in a group care environment with a consistent age group is preferred.
• Effective problem‑solving, conflict resolution, classroom management, communication with children and families, organization, time management, curriculum planning, and assessment documentation.
• Currently hold adult and infant/child CPR & First Aid certification (preferred).
• Bilingual/multilingual language preference based on center needs.

Shift Type: Full Time / Part Time
Schedule: Flexible Substitute Schedule with minimum two days availability per week
Compensation: $16.50 – $23.25 hourly
