Deputy ALD for Operations (DALD/Ops) in the Technology Innovation Directorate (TID) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The DALD/Ops is the senior TID leader responsible for providing strategic, scientific, and operational vision and leadership over the Directorate's Conduct of Operations, in alignment with SLAC's mission. The DALD/Ops is TID's champion of disciplined operation. The DALD/Ops will have the opportunity to provide key intellectual leadership over the execution of a robust portfolio of projects and activities serving internal SLAC programs, and an array of Federal and industrial sponsors through strategic partnerships.
The Directorate is a technology-focused organization with expertise in Advanced Instrumentation, Scientific Computing and Radio frequency (RF) Accelerator Research critical to advance the wide range of scientific programs Directorate is expected to be an innovation engine for SLAC and help guide the Lab in new strategic directions by enhancing these core capabilities. These capabilities will be used to provide technology solutions to a broader set of agencies and sponsors, and to enhance SLAC's user facilities, accelerator capabilities, scientific mission, and strategic initiatives.
The Directorate has over 200 engineers, technicians, and scientists. TID leverages state-of-the-art scientific and engineering expertise and advanced instrumentation capabilities to develop novel technologies for a diverse sponsor base and for the benefit of the nation.
As a member of the Directorate's senior management, you will report to the Associate Laboratory Director for TID. As the ALD's deputy, you will serve as the Directorate liaison to the SLAC organizations led by the Lab's Director of Operations and Director of Project & Infrastructure, and other key stakeholders across the laboratory.
Your Specific Responsibilities Will Include- Providing leadership, management, and strategic vision for disciplined operations in SLAC's Technology Innovation Directorate.
- Leading effective implementation of Conduct of Engineering and Conduct of Project Management in TID.
- Representing TID on SLAC Operations and Project & Infrastructure-related Committees and Councils (e.g. Operations Subcouncil).
- Providing strategic leadership over TID work planning.
- Leading facility planning strategy to assure staff have the laboratory and office space for effective operations.
- Strategic leadership for TID's emergency response planning; events (e.g. wild-fires), accidents (staff injury), and incidents (water-leak).
- Building SLAC's values (excellence, integrity, collaboration, respect, and creativity), and safety into every aspect of your directorate's work and culture.
- Contributing to directorate strategic planning and execution to align with the strategic mission of the Laboratory, including in partnership with colleague DALDs.
- Partnering with Stanford University, DOE, and other National/International Laboratories to ensure development and implementation of best scientific, operational, and business practices.
- Representing SLAC in a wide variety of activities involving the DOE, Stanford University and other DOE-sponsored Laboratories, including chairing and/or participating on committees, reviews, and or working groups to address Laboratory System-wide issues.
- Leveraging synergies and building collaborations both with Stanford departments and across directorates within SLAC
- Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline relevant to TID's mission and demonstrated excellence in leading disciplined operations at a >$10M scale research organization or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- A record of crafting strategy spanning multiple disciplines.
- At least 10 years of experience in fostering an environment that cultivates innovation and groundbreaking R&D while simultaneously ensuring delivery to sponsors and projects.
- Experience working in an environment dedicated to quality, safety and customer service.
- Ability to negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes, manage conflict, and motivate others to action.
- Verbal and written communication skills to effectively build and maintain working partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
