Position SummaryThe R&D Experimental Aircraft Technician supports Enstrom’s Research and Development team in the fabrication, modification, assembly, and maintenance of experimental and prototype rotorcraft and associated systems. This position blends traditional aircraft maintenance with hands‑on prototyping, machining, and avionics integration to support ongoing design and flight test programs.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Perform maintenance, inspection, and repair of experimental and prototype aircraft in accordance with engineering instructions and experimental operating limitations.
- Assist engineers in the installation and modification of flight test instrumentation, sensors, and electrical systems.
- Fabricate components, fixtures, and assemblies using machining, welding, and composite techniques.
- Support prototype assembly, teardown, and configuration changes during development and testing.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance, modifications, and inspections in accordance with R&D documentation and FAA guidelines.
- Participate in ground runs, system checks, and pre‑flight preparations for experimental aircraft.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, mechanics, and avionics technicians to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
- Uphold safety standards and maintain a clean, organized work environment consistent with 5S and company policies.
- FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate preferred upon hire; required within six (6) months of employment.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in aircraft maintenance, prototyping, or experimental flight test environments preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical instructions.
- Experience with machine shop equipment (lathe, mill, band saw) and general fabrication methods.
- Familiarity with aircraft electrical systems, wiring practices, and troubleshooting preferred.
- Understanding of experimental aircraft procedures and 14 CFR Part 21/43 requirements is a plus.
- Ability to adapt to changing project priorities and collaborate in a fast‑paced development environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in confined or elevated spaces.
- Comfortable working around active aircraft, including during engine runs and system tests.
This position operates primarily in an R&D hangar and prototype shop environment, with occasional support for flight test or off‑site prototype operations as needed.
