Transportation Manager

Transportation manager role at US Foods responsible for ensuring a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through effective transportation operations.

Job Details

Work schedule:

Tuesday – Friday, start time 9:00 AM;
Saturday, 3:30 AM – 1:30 PM. CDL A – required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead with a safety mindset, championing safety procedures, processes, and training to create a safety‑first culture in the Transportation department.
  • Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through coaching, training on policies, problem resolution, and leading by example.
  • Discuss performance with senior managers and create plans to address performance gaps.
  • Encourage upward communication and motivate associates to achieve department goals.
  • Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates; drive associate engagement and retention.
  • Build high‑performing teams by interviewing, hiring, and coaching Transportation personnel, including disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Monitor production goals and maintain a zero‑error attitude to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  • Anticipate, analyze, troubleshoot delivery issues, and devise cost‑effective and legal solutions.
  • Ensure team adherence to DOT regulations and improve processes for safety and efficiency.
  • Conduct routine Safety and Driver Meetings.
Other Duties
  • Investigate all accidents, maintain an accident file, track causes, and implement preventative action.
  • Effectively schedule working shifts using planning tools such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
SUPERVISION
  • Direct:
    Union and/or non‑union Drivers.
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Internal:
    Transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, and internal customers across departments (e.g., Sales).
  • External:
    Customers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • May spend significant time on the road and in a truck with drivers, exposed to noise and vibration; also spend time in an office working on a computer.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience overseeing a workforce.
  • Experience as a driver is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and people‑development skills.
  • Strong understanding of DOT requirements; familiarity with inventory control, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).
Travel
  • Approximately 10% travel required for meetings and/or training.
Education and Training
  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Compensation

Expected base rate between $60,000 and $90,000, depending on experience and location.
