An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain hands-on clinical experience. Each NVA hospital is unique, but all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. At Brightwood Animal Hospital, externships are designed for clinical-year students.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. to view stipend amounts and HERE for additional details.
