Hiring Range: The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account factors such as experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,.

About the Job

A seasoned advising administrator, the Director of the Bobcat Advising Center (BAC) is responsible for the implementation, delivery, and assessment of undergraduate academic advising services for:

  • First-year students in every major
  • Undeclared students in every class year
  • Lower division undeclared transfers

Responsibilities include oversight and management of programming and professional academic advising staff, fostering student success, cross-unit collaboration, staff development, and policy development for comprehensive advising experiences. The Director works with partners across campus to support student success, ensures adherence to campus systems and processes, and may provide academic advising or referrals as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Academic Advising Strategy and Programming
    :
    Lead the BAC operations, coordinate advising services for target student populations, manage center operations and a budget of approximately $1 million, and develop a consistent advising experience campus-wide. Collaborate with campus advising leadership and faculty to identify barriers to student progress and to align advising practices with institutional priorities.
  • Staff Supervision & Professional Development
    :
    Supervise professional advisors, address complex student issues, develop and deliver staff training, and manage performance and professional development for staff; may supervise non-academic staff.
  • Student Enrollment, Success, and Retention
    :
    Develop and coordinate initiatives that support enrollment, academic success, and persistence; advise campus partners on communication strategies for first-year and undeclared students; collaborate with campus units to resolve complex cases; support staff in guiding students through enrollment and program decisions.
  • Campus and System Service
    :
    Participate in strategic committees and campus/system work groups to inform decisions affecting undergraduate academic advising.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related field and/or equivalent experience
    • Advanced degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs or related area (preferred)
    • Five years of directly related higher education academic advising experience, including three years of supervisory experience of full-time professional staff
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in advising and student support
    • Knowledge of university systems and tools (e.g., Banner, My Degree Path  or similar)
    • Understanding of university structures and governance
    • Knowledge of trends in higher education related to student success and retention
    • Ability to interpret academic policies and transfer articulation
    • Assessment and data analysis experience to evaluate advising programs
    • Understanding of FERPA and student privacy considerations
