This description provides an overview of the part-time ESL noncredit instructional opportunity and its requirements.

Overview

This is a part-time instructional assignment in the Noncredit Department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Adult Education and Noncredit. The professor could be assigned to teach a variety of English courses. The maximum teaching load is 10 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

Examples of Duties / Essential Functions
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area and campus professional activities/committees
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g., submit grades on time to admissions and records
Qualifications

Required:

  • A Bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual bicultural studies, reading, or speech AND a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language
    , which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor OR
  • A Bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified in the previous bullets AND one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution AND a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language
    , which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor OR
  • Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting duties, staff shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.

Preferred:

  • Teaching experience in the field
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments
