Merced College invites applications for two full‑time, tenure‑track Professor of Biology positions—one at the Merced Campus and one at the Los Banos Campus. The positions require a commitment to teaching across all levels of biology, fostering student success in in‑person, online, and hybrid modalities.
At the Merced Campus, join a collaborative team of 12 biology faculty and three lab technicians within a total STEM faculty of 39. The Biology program offers a comprehensive curriculum supporting diverse academic and career pathways, including an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT), Cal‑GETC GE Breadth courses, prerequisite preparation for competitive pre‑health programs, and strong transfer opportunities to four‑year universities.
At the Los Banos Campus, many students pursue Biology as part of their pathway into Nursing and other allied health careers. The role offers the opportunity to lead a vital program meeting regional workforce needs, teaching foundational coursework to advanced transfer‑level and pre‑nursing sciences.
General DescriptionThis is a full‑time, tenure‑track instructional assignment under the general direction of the Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The professor will teach a variety of courses with a standard teaching load of 15 units per semester, which may include face‑to‑face, distance education, evening and weekend hours.
Essential Functions- Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations.
- Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students.
- Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi).
- Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations.
- Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods.
- Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
- Participate in the development and review of curriculum.
- Participate in the development of teaching‑learning methods and materials.
- Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees.
- Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles.
- Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes.
- Master's Degree in any biological science
- or Bachelor’s Degree in any biological science and Master’s Degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science
- or the equivalent
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Teaching experience at the college level.
- Teaching experience and/or coursework in Anatomy and Physiology.
- Related experience will be considered.
- Ability and willingness to teach all levels of biology offered at Merced College.
- Current technology skills related to teaching the discipline; willingness to pursue future technological developments and a commitment to integrating technology into the curriculum.
- Ability to relate the practical and theoretical aspects of the subject matter to the student.
