The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Structure Construction (SC), is recruiting for multiple Transportation Engineers (TE) (Civil). Project site locations include Merced, Stanislaus, and Mariposa Counties. Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) in DES, SC, the TE (Civil) classification is the entry, working and journeyman level of professional engineering work in Caltrans. The incumbent performs a wide variety of professional engineering work primarily in a field setting but will include an office setting;

as incumbents progress in experience, they will be assigned more difficult work. This work is performed on highway construction projects involving bridges, buildings, walls, barriers, drainage structures, sign structures and appurtenances. The incumbent works as a field engineer to ensure contractors build structures in compliance with the contract documents (Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, Contract Plans and Special Provisions). May act as an Assistant Structure Representative or Assistant Resident Engineer / Resident Engineer on construction projects.

As part of employment with DES, there is a mandatory TE (Civil) Professional Development Rotation Program that applies to all permanent full‑time TE (Civil) hired after January 1, 2017. Temporary relocation more than 50 miles from your permanent unit may be necessary for rotation assignments.

Eligibility may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.

• The position(s) require(s) a valid California drivers license (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
• Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
• Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) and a resume are required. Recent and upcoming graduates are also to provide an unofficial listing of their coursework.
