Job Summary
Forensic Science Examiner 1 – 40‑hour full‑time position within the Division of Scientific Services, Forensic Biology Unit, Connecticut State.
Location:
Meriden, CT. Salary range: $78,480 – $106,374 per year.
- Full‑process forensic biology examinations under the supervision of lab professionals.
- Collaborate with forensic science examiners and law‑enforcement partners.
- On‑site, 40 hours per week (Monday‑Friday).
- Receive training in forensic biology techniques including serological screening, DNA analysis, report preparation, and courtroom testimony.
- Examine submitted evidence and complete written and electronic documentation.
- Photograph evidence and document its condition.
- Remove trace materials for analysis in criminalistics and identification.
- Perform serological screening and confirmatory analysis of body fluids.
- Collect evidentiary samples for DNA analysis and conduct DNA testing.
- Prepare comprehensive reports, providing explanations and interpretations of results.
- Testify as an expert witness in court.
- Assist in crime‑scene reconstruction and on‑scene collection and preservation of evidence.
- Maintain instrumentation and equipment; safeguard laboratory physical evidence.
- Participate in research programs and apply emerging techniques.
- Assist in training laboratory staff and law‑enforcement personnel as needed.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Knowledge of modern crime‑scene processing and evidence identification methods.
- Understanding of analytical techniques and procedures for evidentiary materials.
- Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation, documents, firearms, fingerprints, and reconstruction techniques.
- Oral and written communication skills; interpersonal aptitude.
- Ability to conduct laboratory analysis, use computer software, and act as an expert witness in a court of law.
Six (6) years of experience in forensic analysis of evidentiary material.
- College training in forensic science, applied genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology, or a closely related field may substitute up to four (4) years of experience (15 semester hours per year).
- A Master’s degree may substitute one additional year of experience.
- A Ph.D. may substitute the required experience.
- Successful completion of a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by Department of Administrative Services may substitute experience.
- Professional experience with aseptic handling of forensic evidence.
- Experience conducting forensic serological testing and forensic evidence screening.
- Experience with DNA techniques including extraction, quantitation, amplification, or capillary electrophoresis injection.
- Experience working in a forensic science laboratory using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Experience with report writing for forensic DNA testing.
- Experience with courtroom testimony related to forensic DNA testing.
- May be required to work flexible hours.
- May be required to travel.
Incumbents may be exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
