Automation Engineer

Leveraging deep expertise in automation and controls, the Automation Engineer will lead the design, programming, and implementation of automated systems and process improvements to drive operation efficiency and reliability.

The Automation Engineer will play a critical role in coordinating and executing automation projects across the plant. They will work closely with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to provide technical guidance and lead activities such as PLC programming, HMI development, equipment integration, start-ups, commissioning and site acceptance testing. This individual will ensure a seamless coordination between automation projects, production schedules, delivering robust solutions that enhance throughput and reduce downtime.

They will be instrumental in driving the successful deployment of new automated equipment and systems.

• Reports directly to the Engineering Manager.
• Communicates regularly and have a strong relationship with team members in operations and maintenance and collaborates with Marketing and R&D on new items/processed.

• Identify and implement technology upgrades for systems and processes.
• Support equipment installations, commissioning, and start-up activities.
• Ability to work in current programming systems and new programming systems.
• Train operators and maintenance staff on automation systems and programming updates.
• Provide technical support across shifts and lead process improvement projects.
• Perform regular backups of automation programs and ensure system integrity.
• Upgrade automation systems as necessary to stay up to date.
• Design, program, and maintain automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, Robotics).
• Troubleshoot automation and robotic issues, develop solutions for improved performance.
• Collaborated with maintenance and operation to resolve automation-related problems.
• Maintain and update automation documentation: process flow, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and standards.
• Create and maintain process flow, P&IDs, engineering standards and documents.
• Assist in shutdowns and start-ups when needed/requested
• And other duties as assigned.

• 5+ years of automation experience in a production or manufacturing environment (confectionery experience is a plus)
• Strong PLC, HMI, and robotics programming skills, ladder logic, structured text, motion control
• Electrical and controls knowledge
• Ability to read drawings, modify and create drawings, work within provided drawing systems
• Ability to work in project management software systems
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and process systems as they relate to automated processes
• Travel may be required on occasion sourcing new equipment, technology, and equipment testing.

• High School Diploma or G.E.D is required
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Automation, Mechatronics, Control Systems, and/or Computer Engineering
• Preferred/Optional
• • Masters in Automations, Robotics, or related discipline
  • Certifications in PLC, robotics, or industrial control systems (Allen-Bradley, Rockwell)
  • Industrial networking, SCADA, MES systems
• Or relative experience within an Engineering Department for minimum of 15 years
