Purpose and Scope
The Inpatient RN provides direct patient care in accordance with company policies and procedures, including FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospitals’ policies. Areas of practice include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The RN partners with the hospital to deliver quality care and a positive patient experience.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Under limited supervision, applies extensive knowledge to perform a broad range of tasks including direct patient care in multiple modalities: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
- Provides supervision and direction of Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; provides direction and education to ICU staff for CRRT.
- Responsible for direct patient care of assigned patients in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services setting, applying the appropriate treatment technique as prescribed.
- Assesses patients’ responses to therapy and makes adjustments or modifications to the treatment plan as indicated by the credentialed physician. Communicates problems or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager, physician, hospital primary nurse and others as needed.
- Delivers safe, effective care in a timely and efficient manner.
- Provides organized, concise shift reports for patients on assigned shifts, applying critical thinking to schedule patients when needed.
- Manages the implementation, administration, monitoring, and documentation of intradialytic transfusions, including notifying physicians of adverse reactions.
- Collaborates and communicates with physicians and other healthcare team members to interpret, adjust, and coordinate daily patient care plans to ensure continuity of care.
- Initiates and communicates to facility nursing staff and appropriate hospital personnel as needed.
- Accurately documents all treatment information in the individual patient record (ACES) and the hospital record.
- Maintains cleanliness of dialysis machine surfaces, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments per policies.
- Performs pre‑treatment dialysis machine alarm testing and initiates Solution Delivery System when applicable.
- Operates all related equipment safely, troubleshooting minor issues and using supplies efficiently.
- Understands, conducts, and documents dialysis/apheresis machine safety tests, equipment calibration, dialysate testing, and compliance with documentation standards.
- Completes and documents ongoing participation in QAI activities.
- Participates in staff meetings and training/ orientation as scheduled.
- Acts as a subject‑matter expert to hospital staff for dialysis‑related patient or equipment complications.
- Reports all new or unusual incidents, complaints, or problems to the inpatient manager per Adverse Event Report requirements; may be assigned to in‑center patient care as needed.
- Reviews and complies with the Code of Business Conduct, applicable company policies, and local, state, federal laws.
- Assists with various projects assigned by direct supervisor.

- Direct patient care, interacting with patients, clinicians, hospital staff, and physicians; travel between assigned hospitals and regional meetings/educational events.
- Position includes on‑call rotation (night, day, weekend, holidays).
- Potential exposure to infectious materials and contagious diseases/materials.
- Direct patient care involves heavy lifting and moving of patient and equipment >200 lbs (with assistance); may lift chemical and water solutions up to 30 lbs up to 5 feet.
- Provides supervision and direction of Patient Care Technicians (Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technicians) and clerical staff; educates ICU staff for CRRT.
