Senior Mechanisms Manufacturing Engineer - Lunar
Join to apply for the Senior Mechanisms Manufacturing Engineer - Lunar role at Blue Origin
Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low‑cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion.
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. It includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
Position Specific Details- Shift: A | Mon‑Fri (6am‑2:30pm)
- Location:
Space Coast, FL - Relocation:
Available - Potential travel up to 10% of the time for training and other support activities.
- Support the industrialization of new products in areas such as solar arrays, integration and test, avionics, and structures.
- Contribute to design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), design for test (DFT), key to building reliable vehicles for space exploration.
- Translate engineering requirements into robust, repeatable manufacturing processes that support Blue Origin’s mission.
- Collaborate closely with design engineering, quality assurance, supply chain, and production teams to accelerate building a road to space.
- Develop and maintain manufacturing documentation, including work instructions, process flow diagrams, tool designs, and inspection plans.
- Evaluate and implement new manufacturing technologies and methods (e.g., composites, precision machining, additive manufacturing, advanced assembly).
- Support root cause analysis of process or product non‑conformances; develop and implement corrective actions that enhance reliability and performance.
- Ensure all work aligns with applicable quality and safety standards (AS9100, ISO 9001), supporting a safe and sustainable future in space.
- Participate in process FMEAs, risk assessments, and validation of new production lines and equipment.
- Identify and complete opportunities for efficiency gains and cost reduction, optimizing our ability to achieve our mission at scale.
- Gain expertise in at least one key specialty area (solar arrays, integration and test, build flow/sequencing, avionics, structures, etc.), with the desire to deepen expertise and broaden impact.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university.
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or process engineering role.
- 3+ years of experience creating English work instructions.
- Must be able to work second shift and have flexibility to move shifts as needed. Open to work extended hours if required.
- Master’s degree in a relevant engineering field.
- Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt Certification.
- Familiarity with quality and safety standards (AS9100, ISO 9001).
- Manufacturing engineering experience in aerospace or other high‑reliability industries, with primary expertise in mechanisms, custom machine design (motors, actuators, linear rails, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings), and complex mechanical assemblies.
- Proficient in CAD and FEA‑based analysis software for mechanisms and structural applications (Creo and ANSYS Workbench preferred; experience with FEMAP, NASTRAN, NX Advanced Simulation, ProE Simulate/Mechanica).
- Demonstrated ability to perform detailed hand calculations, free‑body diagram creation, and complex FEM/structural analysis.
- Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), including transition from development design to production.
- Working knowledge of engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing, including GD&T, tolerance/stack‑up analysis, FMEA, and common manufacturing processes (CNC machining, manual mills/lathes, welding, sheet metal, lifting/rigging, inspection, assembly).
