Thermal Mechanical Engineer III – Lunar Permanence

Blue Origin is seeking a Thermal Mechanical Engineer III to develop systems that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently. The role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit and involves working with NASA on the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development program.

Responsibilities
  • Build 3D models, detail part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents.
  • Coordinate with other subsystem teams on the design of structural interfaces.
  • Provide on‑site manufacturing and production support, including travel when needed.
  • Support configuration development and trade studies.
  • Participate in subsystem test planning, execution, data reduction, and analysis.
  • Work with multi‑functional teams responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world‑class aerospace hardware.
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct tests, and review test data.
  • Participate in the development and purchase of new equipment and tooling.
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget, and technical status.
  • Coach, mentor, and technically assist junior engineers.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements and operational cost savings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in engineering and at least 7 years of related experience.
  • Experience on launch vehicles, spacecraft, aircraft, or similar in one or more of the areas below: flexible/soft good insulation for cryogenic through high temperature applications, heater size and power optimization, knowledge of passive thermal materials and coatings.
  • Strong mechanical design skills using Creo.
  • Proficiency in authoring and interpreting GEOMETRIC DIMENSIONING AND TOLERANCE analysis (ASME Y14.5).
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in engineering and 10+ years of related experience.
  • Excellent communication and the ability to build consensus among stakeholders.
  • Experience with industry‑standard analysis codes such as Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS‑Dyna, Hypermesh, or Hypersizer.
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware.
  • Experience performing trades with vehicle‑level and subsystem design teams to facilitate fabrication and integration of component parts.
  • Demonstrated composites integration, analysis, and manufacturing knowledge.
  • Proven experience developing manufacturing processes for production and designing for manufacturability.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control.
  • Experience with a variety of hardware manufacturing practices including drilling, shimming, fastening, composites fabrication, fluids integration, avionics integration, instrumentation, and non‑destructive testing.
