The CBSO seeks to appoint new members to its Community Board, which helps steer the CBSO’s strategic decision-making in relation to our local communities and helps ensure that the work of CBSO is relevant to and representative of the local communities of Birmingham, Sandwell, and the wider West Midlands.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise, guide, and inform the direction of the CBSO, with particular reference to our Learning & Engagement and Audience Development strategies, ensuring a joined‑up approach with other local organisations, providers, and service‑users. This may include:
    Consultation and planning with CBSO to ensure our work complements and enhances existing local provision and meets local need. Helping to shape our programme on the concert platform including programmatic themes or, where relevant, repertoire. Support strategic marketing and communications initiatives.
  • Encourage links between the Orchestra and other local organisations to increase region‑wide audience development initiatives above and beyond the CBSO and ensure long‑lasting benefits for local arts providers.
  • Work with the CBSO to develop new audiences for the region’s wide cultural offer, including partners’ initiatives and CBSO’s own season of work. Support the development of the CBSO’s Family Concert offer in Birmingham, ensuring that the themes, aims, and activities are appropriate for the intended audiences.
  • To support the monitoring and evaluation of community‑based work undertaken by the CBSO.
  • Work together to programme community co‑created work in response to CBSO’s work on the concert platform.
  • Act as a critical friend to the Orchestra in the region and ask critical and challenging questions to help us build a more representative organisation and programme of work.
  • Offer contacts and direct connections into communities.
  • Where relevant, signpost Community Board members’ own activities within their organisations, communities, or service users.
  • Disseminate materials amongst colleagues, participants, and patrons.

Voluntary (nominal per‑meeting fees are available for self‑employed, freelance, or unemployed members)
