This role is part of the Medium Caliber Gun Systems Group under Northrop Grumman Defense Systems. The Systems Chief Engineer leads technical excellence for medium caliber product lines, drives development execution, and supports production and customers.

• Report to the head of engineering at the Mesa site and maintain technical excellence across medium caliber guns systems product lines.
• Lead development programs, resolving highly complex technical problems.
• Serve as the final engineering technical authority for assigned products.
• Ensure design factors such as contractual, environmental, cost, schedule, technical performance, system integration, producibility, interchangeability, and material requirements are considered during new product development.
• Lead failure investigations and implement corrective actions.
• Act as a technical interface to external customers and technical organizations.
• Collaborate closely with project engineering and program management to meet overall program objectives.
• Share knowledge and provide mentoring to other engineers.
• Guide staff on interpreting operating procedures and process documents.
• Drive continuous improvement of engineering tools, methods, and technical capabilities.
• Lead and coordinate continuous improvement projects benefiting the department and other functions.

• BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
• 15 years of design and development experience in defense or aerospace
• 5+ years of project or program leadership
• Ability to resolve difficult technical problems
• Experience with highly integrated mechanical/electrical systems
• Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T, ANSI Y14.5
• Understanding of design for assembly / design for manufacturing (DFA/DFM)
• Experience in failure analysis and robust corrective action implementation
• Experience writing and reviewing test plans, procedures, and reports
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Strong technical writing skills
• U.S. Citizen, able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance
• Position may require domestic and international travel
• Position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by ATF; candidates required to complete an Employee Possessor Questionnaire.

• Advanced degree (MS) in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
• Experience with MIL Standards and DO requirements (including MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-882)
• Familiarity with metallurgical concepts (heat treating, coatings)
• Strong background in stress and dynamic analysis and testing
• Experience in Finite Element modeling
• Design experience with electric motors, solenoids, sensors, and gear trains
• Design experience with safety-critical control systems
